A step by step guide to a typical block paving installation.
The all important preparation
Before any setting out can
commence the proposed area needs to be cleared of all shrubbery and
foliage etc.
Excavation of proposed area
can now take place. A mini digger and breaker will now be used to
reduce ground levels to a minimum of 200mm.
Cart away to tip is carried out
by grab lorries once excavation is
completed.
The ground can now be prepared
and compacted.
The installation of surface water channels,
recessed manhole covers, soak aways and drain surrounds is now carried
out.
Laying of sub base material. It is essential it is
at least 100mm thick, void free, set to falls and is fully compacted.
Weed suppressing fibre glass
matting is then laid between the sub base and the sharp sand laying
course.
Spreading of sharp sand to a depth of 50mm, then
compacted with a plate vibrator then a further 15mm is loosely
screeded over the top. For drainage purposes a slope needs to be created
dropping 2mm over 1m across and 25mm over 2m length.
Laying of your choice of blocks,
cobbles or slabs then takes place.
Jointing sand is now swept
over the entire area ensuring all joints are filled and a final
compaction can now take place .
The finishing touches can now be
added, such as gates, railings, and connections to lighting.
Your installation is now
complete and ready for use.
